MILAN, Sept 27, 2011 (AFP) - Roaring Twenties style, pleated skirts and green and black combinations are some of the key trends from the spring/summer 2012 collections at Milan Fashion Week, which closed its doors on Tuesday.

Here is a glossary with the top 10 Italian fashion looks of the week:

ART DECO: Geometric patterns on Gucci's glitzy flapper dresses, black trims on Emporio Armani trouser suits and angular cuts from Fendi's Karl Lagerfeld made the era of New York's Chrysler Building a big theme in Milan.

DEMURE: Skirts ended generally lower than in the past, with even the famously sexy Roberto Cavalli going for billowing floor-length skirts. Miuccia Prada set the tone with an elegant ladylike lineup of 1950s models.

EXOTIC: Several designers came up with outfits that were redolent of far-flung travel -- from Max Mara's desert tones, to Trussardi's explorer jumpsuits to Frankie Morello's kitschy Italian monument prints.

FRINGES: There was no shortage of fringed hairstyles from the eccentric attendees at the runways but there were lots of fringes in the collections too including on flamenco dresses from Missoni and Moschino.

GOLD: Gold lames, sequins and embroidery featured heavily on dresses -- including in Dolce & Gabbana's Italian town feast style line-up. The Fendi models even wore gold eyeliner for their runway appearances.

GREEN: In emerald, bottle and mother of pearl shades, green was a dominant colour at Milan including in the new La Perla lingerie collection. Combinations with black were popular -- in line with the Roaring Twenties theme.

JAZZ: It's time to raid those vintage stores, the Jazz Age is back. Etro unveiled its models to the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald. Veronica Etro told reporters backstage: "I saw some Fred Astaire films and listened to the music."

MARINE: Donatella Versace and Giorgio Armani both went for seaside inspirations with the sister of late fashion legend Gianni Versace unveiling a glimmering lineup of "technological mermaids" for the modern age.

PLATFORMS: A change of tack from last year's boots, platform sandals were a hit but proved tricky for the models and caused a few stumbles. Among the main advocates were Versace and D&G in their last collection for Milan.

PLEATS: This is perhaps the main take-away from the shows -- knee-length pleated skirts are back for next summer. Pleated alternating with straight sections of fabric make the design more playful than preppy.
