Sunglass specialist Safilo has had a good start to the year. For the company’s first quarter 2013, sales are up 2.9% to 297 million euros. EBDITA rose by 7.5% to 34.7 million while net profit saw a double figure increase to 13.4 million euros (+12.1%).

Despite financial difficulties experienced in Europe, Safilo saw an 8.3% sales increase on the continent to 128.2 million euros. Sales in North Europe outdid those of the South, notably down to a strong travel retail presence. Sales in North American were on the up, with a progression of 2.5%.

The start to the year was promising for the Asian market too, with certain brands in the portfolio recording double-figure growth, though sales were down by 4.3% at constant exchange rates to 46 million euros against first quarter 2012.

According to the company, sales of luxury brands contributed largely to growth at Safilo.
