E-tail and mail order retailer Joe Browns has named a new chairman as it prepares to open the first in a series of retail stores.

Derek Lovelock has many years experience in UK retail

Current chairman Peter Higgins is stepping down after eight years to hand over to Derek Lovelock, one of the most experienced executives in UK retail.

Lovelock said he was looking forward to “supporting [managing director] Simon Brown and his team as they open their first stores in the UK and overseas, bringing this brand to a new audience.”

The new chairman has spent his entire career in fashion retail, most recently as executive chairman of Mamas and Papas and non-executive chairman of Jack Wills, which he will continue.

Prior to this he was chairman of Aurora Fashions, owner of Karen Millen, Coast, Oasis and Warehouse. He has also been a main board member of Storehouse and Sears.

Simon Brown paid tribute to outgoing Higgins, describing “a glorious eight years” that have been “a lot of fun”.

He said Lovelock’s arrival comes as the company works to turn itself into a  “true multi-channel retailer and give people that haven’t heard of our brand the full Joe Browns experience.”

The decision to move into physical stores comes on the back of two consecutive record sales years and a revenue rise of more than 30%.
